The (mexican) Breakfast Club

Huevos Rancheros! Or in loose translation country-side eggs, or farm eggs. Although it might seem the perfect equivalent to the English breakfast the Huevos Rancheros are in fact most commonly eaten as brunch. Originating from Huevos muteleños the original Oaxaca breakfast consisting of Eggs, Tortilla, beans and ground cheese, the Huevos Rancheros consists of Tortillas, fried eggs, tomato chilli sauce, beans (not to be confused with Heinz beans), avocado and sometimes potatoes.

Huevos Rancheros! @ the Breakfast club

The breakfast club reincarnation of this mouth watering breakfast is closer to the English breakfast, replacing the old’ blighty ingredients like for like with Mexican ones.

  • Tortillas or pita-bread replace hash browns – not sure we have a win here – but certainly healthier
  • Spicy chorizo replaces sausage – This is a fair trade
  • Home cooked beans replace Heinz beans – The ‘fresh’ beans are tastier and add more flavour to breakfast – nice change
  • Guacamole doesn’t replace anything and it’s very welcome!
  • Sour cream replaces brown sauce? Trust me, you’ll need it after that spicy Chorizo
  • Fresh vegetables (diced) replace mushrooms
  • Ok we’re short-changed on black pudding but it’s not a great loss and not everyones cup of tea

Where to find the best Huevos Rancheros in London?

The usual suspects are Macondo and The breakfast club. Macondo uses more fresh spices and ingredients and uses tortillas instead of pittas, but the breakfast club uses Chorizo. I still prefer Macondo for it’s smaller queues and more chilled atmosphere. The Breakfast club is off coarse vibrant and exciting attracting a young and beautiful crowd, but Macondo is an excellent choice and you don’t have to queue.

English breakfast carrys on!

An Englishman was writing for the Times today how the English breakfast is an abomination Direct quotes from Giles Coren article for the Times online : http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/life_and_style/food_and_drink/article3758517.ece

Hash-browns are dismissed as “ghastly manifestations of American imperialism”

“A good English breakfast never lets you down.” No, it kills you.

What the hell event do they have in mind, the 3,000m casualty dash? The Triple Barf (also called the hop, skip and vomit)? The Synchronised Massive Coronary?

You never see a person with a degree eating a fry-up, do you?

Clearly the English breakfast is not only the cornerstone of British diet and the proudest culinery delight of Britain, but also helps Britain keep calm and carry on, unlike that very unfortunate Giles Coren character who was writing this angry article over her oat serial with 0% fat yogurt.

Giles, you may be right to advocate health, but a bit of advice for your heart: Don’t stress so much about the little things – have a breakfast you enjoy in moderation – keep calm – and carry on!

Ferrari’s greasy spoon captured on camera. I like Ferraris, but sometimes it’s too much for my stomach.

Also I was wondering – it is ok to steam a late in a plastic container? Oh well… here it is:

Bit of a disappointment the cock tavern today as 4 out of our group didn’t get breakfast at all after 45m wait. Still the old Cock Tavern is a classic and was busting with life at 8am in the morning on Friday 30th.
